Civic issues
Topics getting the most attention in El Monte public meetings, ranked by how frequently they come up.
Council Governance Protocol Changes
The council is rewriting a 20-year-old rulebook covering council conduct, dais seating, certificate limits, public comment rules, and when the city will defend members against lawsuits. Members clashed over capping presentations and the vague 'behavior exposing the city to liability' language, with social media rules and a code of conduct to come back later.
Council Censure
El Monte's City Council has officially censured the mayor for his behavior towards a critic. This move signals a significant internal conflict and a public airing of grievances within the city's leadership.
Council Member Debt
An El Monte council member might owe the city a whopping $70,000, but he says he's already paid it back. This dispute could cause some serious drama at city hall.
